The Bottle in My Boot

Hairstylists get a lot of gifts at holiday time. I like to let the gifts pile up to make my other clients feel guilty. Just kidding. I get a lot of wine. This bottle took me by surprise. He puts the wine down with all the others, doesn’t say a word about it.

Château Lafite Rothschild Pauillac 1984. My wife, Dana, is a waitress at a prime steak restaurant. Lots of wine. Big palates. Bigger wallets.

Tasting notes. I can’t taste cherry, leather, mineral notes. It’s sweet or dry, that’s it. No difference, cheap or expensive.

Dana loves to have a glass of wine while talking with her friends. The house is loaded with gifts, mostly wine. Home from work, she is in a rapid-fire conversation with a friend, sipping on what I thought was a special-occasion bottle of wine. This bottle, I hid in my boot.

New Year’s Eve, her birthday. Two problems. She told me she was always under double pressure to have fun. No special plans. I bought filets and decided the French wine should come out of my boot.

“Where did that come from?”

“It’s a gift.”

Google.

She said, “Sell it!”

“We have to decant this.” Let it breathe. OK by me, I’m cooking. Glasses poured. It smells like dirt. Dana assures me it will change.

We have dinner, finish the bottle. She was right. It did change.

She looked at me and said, “I don’t know what was better, the wine or your pan sauce!”
