I’ve always lived here. I was asked if I’d ever thought about moving somewhere cooler. I had to clarify: culture or climate?
Blue-collar families stay put. Get a job, get married, buy a house, have kids. Exactly what I did.
Regret that plan? To a certain degree, yes. Having the awareness to imagine a different future when I was young? Nope. It never occurred to me that there were options. Reading that makes me sound kind of dumb.
When I was nineteen or twenty, financing a Marshall amp seemed like a good idea. At the last second, I realized, “Man, you can’t afford this, and you get scared as shit playing in front of people.”
So here I am.
Did I miss out? Am I content? If I could do it over again, would I?
Count Basie and Oscar Peterson are in my man cave, telling me that where I’ve landed ain’t bad.
